Review: Moonlight The Halloween Cat

Moonlight: The Halloween Cat by Cynthia Rylant
Illustrated by Melissa Sweet

Moonlight is a curious little black cat who is headed out for adventure on her favorite night of the year, Halloween! She loves Halloween night because there are friendly pumpkin faces and inviting scarecrows' laps. The moon and stars shine bright in the sky. She also enjoys being around the children while they go trick-or-treating from house to house. There are a lot of other animals out on Halloween night. Moonlight has a fun time exploring all around her town.

The illustrations in this book fill the pages with darkness and mystery. The blues and greens throughout the book show that while the book is set at nighttime, it is still happy and fun. While the sky, trees, and Moonlight are painted with darker colors, all of the pumpkins, houses, and the moon shine bright. These warm, bright colors help illustrate the fun and friendliness of this holiday.

BJ or Moonlight?! Hard to tell!

I especially liked this book because Moonlight looks like my kitty, BJ! (Ignore the Christmas ornaments!)

Using this book with preschool and kindergarten students is a great way for them to be introduced to the excitement of Halloween. I would however, be careful with presenting this book in class, as some students' families may not believe in Halloween or want their child learning about this holiday.
